The quantity of refuse to be disposed of has increased during recent years, and is still
increasing, owing to the more extended use of gas and electric cookers. When kitchen
ranges were more generally used it was possible to burn a considerable amount of refuse.
MORTUARY.
This is situated in Cambridge Street, N.W. 1. As a result of the improvements which
have been carried out, this is now a satisfactory and well-equipped building.

The following table gives particidars concerning the number of inquests held, number of bodies received and post-mortem examinations made during the year.

SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
Inspections.—77,545 visits and inspections were made in 1928 by the Council's stall of
Inspectors and Health Visitors.
Of these inspections, 44,675 were made by the District Sanitary Inspectors, 10,034 by
the Inspectors of Food and Food places, 3,722 by the Inspector of Factories and Workshops,
and 19,114 by the Women Sanitary Inspectors and Health Visitors.
The inspections dealt with above are exclusive of the visits made by the Council's
staff at the Maternity and Child Welfare Centres (see page 27), and by the staff of the
Tuberculosis Dispensaries (see page 86) ; nor do they include the work of the disinfecting
staff, particulars of whose work are given on pages 87 and 88.
Notices served.—4,167 intimation notices were served by the Inspectors during the
year. Of t,hes3 3,888 were served by the District Sanitary Inspectors, 241 by the Factory
and Workshop Inspector, 27 by the Food Inspectors, and 11 by the Women Sanitary
Inspectors.
1,906 Statutory notices were served for non-compliance with certain of the above
intimation notices.

found in Tables 6, 7 and 8 on pages 98-100.
