Maternity and Child Welfare Centres.
These are 10 in number. Each Centre is managed by a Committee, the members of
which not only give valuable help at the various consultations, but also provide additional
funds for the maintenance of many other useful activities associated with the work of each
Centre. The Council has representatives on each Committee, and each Committee sends one
representative to the Council's Maternity and Child Welfare Sub-Committee. The Centres
at University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital are not subsidised by the
Council.
The Table on page 27 gives statistics concerning the work of all the Centres during
the year. It will be seen that 480 ante-natal consultations were held, the number of expectant
mothers was 2,008 and their total attendances were 6,993.
For the two previous years the total attendances were 6,685 and 6,822.
The number of consultations for children was 1,697, the children who attended for the
first time numbered 3,147, and the total attendances were 45,801.
For the two previous years the total attendances of children were 44,098 and 47,735.
Particulars concerning some of the special activities of the individual Centres are given
in the following paragraphs : —
St. Pancras School for Mothers, 1, Ampthill Square.
In addition to the consultations provided by the Council, other activities of this
centre include the following: —
Classes for Mothers.
At infant care classes there were 600 attendances; ante-natal care, 211 attendances;
and at needlework, etc., classes, 527 attendances.
Dinners for Mothers and Children.
These are supplied at a very small charge for necessitous cases. 2,307 dinners were
supplied to nursing and expectant mothers, and 2,289 to young children.
Observation Bay Nursery.
This is for children needing special care. There were 1,685 attendances during the
year, of which 933 were made by infants under one year of age, and 752 by children over
one year.
Interviews with parents (other than already recorded) numbered 5,791.
Dental Clinic.
This is provided out of funds from voluntary sources. The Dental Surgeon is
Mr. George Thomson, L.D.S. During the year 43 consultations were held, at which 287
treatments were provided for mothers and 251 for children.
