The vacancies occurring in the Council's dwellings are filled from a waiting list of
applicants, which is an extensive one, and preference is given to St. Pancras families. It is
worth remarking that during the year under review (1927), 58 changes of tenancies occurred
in the above-mentioned premises, and the housing conditions of that number of families were
accordingly improved.
Somers Town Housing Scheme (Wolcot Street Area).
The Borough Council have acquired the freehold and leasehold interests in several
properties in Johnson Street, Wolcot Street and Clarendon Street, for the purpose of carrying
out a housing scheme on this insanitary area. Eleven of the houses (21 to 28, Wolcot Street
and 63, 64 and 65, Clarendon Street) have already been demolished in connection with the
two blocks of working-class dwellings now being erected on the site.
The housing scheme is for the erection at present of four blocks of dwellings (Blocks
A, B, C and D) with 88 separate tenements, comprising 24 two-room, 56 three-room and 8
four-room dwellings. Each tenement will, in addition, be provided with a kitchen containing
a gas cooker, copper, bath, sink, larder and dresser. There will be a separate w.c. and coal
bunker in lobby. A fifth block, comprising 36 dwellings, will be built later, and the total
scheme will provide for 124 separate tenements.
The Council have fixed the weekly rents, inclusive of current rates and water charges,
as follows:—13s. 9d. for two-room; 16s. 9d. for three-room; and 19s. for four-room tenements.
For the next section of building (Blocks C and D) the following forty properties will
be demolished Nos. 1 to 20 and 44 to 54, "Wolcot Street, 34 to 39, Johnson Street, and 38,
39 and 40, Clarendon Street.
It is anticipated that in July, 1928, Blocks A and B, comprising 44 dwellings, will be
completed and ready for the occupation of families from the adjoining houses which are to be
pulled down for the purpose of erecting Blocks C and D.
Brookfield Estate Flats and Goldington Buildings. Provision or Pr am
and Cycle Sheds.
The Council decided to meet the need of accommodation for the storage of prams and
cycles at these buildings in response to the wishes of many of the tenants. It is found that
considerable damage is done to the walls, staircases and inside the flats through prams and
cycles being taken up and down stairs and stored in the passages of flats, and there is a
great strain, especially on the women, in having to carry prams up and down stairs. At the
