REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Year 1927.
For the purpose of this Report, the year consists of the 52 weeks ended 31st December, 1927.
Section 1..STATISTICS AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA.
POPULATION AND GENERAL STATISTICS.
The population of the Borough at the Census of 1921 was 211,366.
According to the estimates of the Registrar-General, during the years from 1923 to
1926 the population of St. Pancras increased from 214,400 to 216,800.
For the year 1927 the Registrar.General estimates the total population of the Borough
at the low figure of 213,200.
These estimates are based upon information obtained with reference to the movement
of persons to and from the Borough, allowing also for the natural increase due to the excess
of births over deaths.
It is somewhat surprising to learn that, during the past twelve months, the steady
increase which had occurred during the preceeding four years should have been more than
obliterated.
The increase of population due to the development of the Holly Lodge Estate may have
been counterbalanced by the clearance of a portion of the Somers Town Housing Site, and also
by the emigration of a number of families who were living under overcrowded conditions, and
who were granted accommodation at Becontree, Downham, or other places outside the
Metropolis. Allowing for these various factors, I am of opinion that the Registrar.General has
under.estimated the population, and therefore the death and other rates based on this estimate
are caused to appear unduly high.
The figures of the Registrar.General have, however, been used throughout this report,
the estimate of total population being used for calculating the marriage and birth rates and
the estimate of the civilian population for calculating the death rate.
