It will be noted that diseases of the heart still head the list of causes of death, although
the numbers show a decrease as compared with the previous year, and are below the average
rate of the previous 10 years.
Deaths from Cancer again show an increase, and this disease now occupies the second
place on the list. The numbers show an increase as compared with those of the previous year,
and arc considerably above the average rate of the previous 10 years. Deaths from Bronchitis
were about the average, whilst those due to Tuberculosis show a welcome and considerable
decrease.
With reference to deaths from infectious diseases, for the first time in the records of the
Borough, not a single death occurred from Scarlet Fever, although 651 cases of this disease
were notified.
Deaths from Measles numbered only 3, but those due to Whooping Cough and Diphtheria
showed an increase. The diagram on the opposite page shows in graphic form the relative
importance of various diseases as causcs of death in the Borough during 1925.
The deaths which occurred during the year are fully classified for causes, age and sex
in Table 2 on page 105.
For purpose of comparison, the death-rates for England and Wales, the County of
London, the Metropolitan Boroughs, and certain of the large towns are given in Table 5 on
page 111.
It will be noted that 21 Metropolitan Boroughs had a lower and 5 a higher general
death-rate than St. Pancras, One was the same.
Of the total 2,745 St. Pancras deaths which occurred during the year, not less than
1,621 took place in public institutions, either within or outside the Borough ; this equals a
proportion of 59 per cent, of the total deaths.

Ward Deaths and Death-Rates.

The number of deaths and the death-rates per 1,000 of population for each of the Wards during the past year were as follows, the figures for the preceding year being also given for comparison:—
