Assistant Medical Officer of Health.
12.—We requested the Medical Officer of Health to report fully upon the position and
duties of the Assistant Medical Officer of Health.
After careful consideration, we have come to the conclusion that, having regard to the
duties at present allocated to the position, it is not necessary to continue such office. The
principal duty of this officer is to conduct consultations at the Council's maternitv and child
welfare centres. Under the reorganisation proposals which we have submitted in regard to
the Public Health Department, the general duties of the position of Assi-tant Medical Officer
of Health will become practically negligible, and it will be a substantial economy for the
consultations now conducted by this officer to be performed by medical officers separately paid
for each clinic.
We are of opinion that the present co-operation of local medical practitioners in
taking consultations at the centres is valuable, and the extension of that co-operation
desirable. Tbeir practical interest and experience in the Council's maternity and child
welfare work is thus obtained, and has the advantage of influencing the attendance of
expectant and nursing mothers at the clinics.
We recommend—
That the Council be advised to arrange for the consultations at the maternity and
child welfare centres, now conducted by the Assistant Medical Officer of Health, to be
carried out by medical officers, at a fee of 1½ guineas per consultation, and to determine
the appointment of Dr. Stella Churchill as Assistant Medical Officer of Health.
