Metropolitan Borough of Saint Pancras.
REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Year 1924.
For the purpose of this Report, the year consists of the 53 weeks ended 3rd January, 1925.
The annual rates are corrected in order to make them comparable with those for other
(fifty.two weeks) years.
Section 1.—VITAL STATISTICS AND ECONOMIC AND GENERAL CONDITIONS.
POPULATION AND GENERAL STATISTICS.
The population of the Borough at the Census of 1921 was 211,366. The total
population of St. Pancras for the year 1924, as estimated by the Registrar.General, was
214,600, the civilian population being estimated at 214,300. The latter estimate (civilian) has
been used in calculating the death.rates in this report, and the former (total) in calculating the
marriage and birth.rates.
For the previous year (1923) the Registrar.General estimated the population of the
Borough to be 214,400, no reference being made to civilian population. This change of
method is to be deprecated as tending to render comparison with other years more difficult.
I am also of opinion that, for the year 1924, the Registrar.General has somewhat
under.estimated the population of the Borough, thus causing the various rates which are
based on this estimate to appear unduly high.
MARRIAGES.
The number of marriages celebrated in 1924 was 1,836. This is equal to a rate of 8.4
per 1,000 of total population.
BIRTHS.
The number of births registered during the year belonging to St. Pancras was 4,112,
making an annual birth.rate of 18.8 per 1,000 of population. The total number of births
actually registered as having taken place in the Borough was 4,447. This figure has to be
corrected by deducting the births of non.residents, which occurred in various public
institutions in the Borough—these numbered 893, and adding the births of parishioners
which occurred outside the Borough—these numbered 558. The corrected figure is therefore
as stated above, 4,112.
