The following table gives the number of cases notified each year since 1912, when the disease first became compulsorily notifiable:—

ACUTE POLIOENCEPHALITIS AND POLIOMYELITIS.
Six cases of Poliomyelitis were notified during the year, and there were no deaths. The following table gives particulars of the cases:—
Date of Notification. | Name. | Age and Sex. | Date of Onset. | Removal to Hospital. | Result and Remarks. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1923. May 5 | A. B. | 9 months (M.) | 1923. April 25 | Middlesex Hospital | Recovered, but right arm paralysed, and weakness in left leg. |
May 5 | A. C. | 13 months (M.) | April 23 | Do. | Recovered, with loss of power in left arm. |
May 25 | W. T, | 3 years (M.) | May 21 | London Temperance Hospital | Recovered. Still has paralysis of right leg and arm. |
June 4 | E.B. | 3 years (F.) | May 28 | University College Hospital | Recovered. Right leg paralysed. |
July 11 | S. C. | 6 years (M.) | June 27 | Middlesex Hospital | Recovered practically completely. |
October 29 | B. L. | 3£ years (F.) | October 10 | Do. | Recovered completely. Doubtful case. |
This affection is chiefly prevalent during the summer months, and the above table
illustrates that fact, five out of the six cases having occurred between May and July. The
death-rate from the disease is always low; but the cases are important, owing to the fact that
permanent paralysis follows in a majority of those attacked by the disease.
The following table gives the number of cases each year since 1912, when the disease first became compulsorily notifiable:—
Year. | Cases Notified. | Cases Fatal | Year. | Cases Notified. | Cases Fatal. |

1913 | 9 | 1 | 1919 | 4 | 1 |
1914 | 3 | 1 | 1920 | 2 | 1 |
1915 | 8 | 0 | 1921 | 4 | 0 |
1916 | 9 | 1 | 1922 | 1 | |
