REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Year 1914.
Part I.—GENERAL STATISTICS.
For the purposes of this Report the year 1914 is the 52 weeks ended 2nd
January, 1915.
POPULATION.
The estimated population of the Borough at the middle of 1914, upon which
the rates in this report are based, is 218,387.
The Registrar-General's estimate is 214,133.
The returns of the Rating Department give the number of houses used as
dwellings (less " empties") to be 22,542 for the census year 1911, and 22,574
for 1914, a slight increase instead of a decrease. It has therefore been
considered advisable to take the 1911 census population for the 1914 estimate
rather than that of the Registrar-General. The census figures for the population
of the different Wards and Registration Sub-Districts have also been
retained in calculating the rates in this Report.
The Registrar-General's estimates for 1912 and 1913 were based on the
assumption that the decrease in population which took place between the
censuses of 1901 and 1911 had since continued at the same rate. On this basis
the 1914 estimate would be 212,497. His 1914 estimate (214,133), however,
has been made by another method (Waters').
MARRIAGES.
The number of marriages celebrated in St. Pancras during 1914 was 2,310,
equal to a rate of 10.6 per 1,000 population.
