DAIRIES, COWSHEDS, AND MILKSHOPS
Cowsheds.—There were at the end of 1914 five licensed cowsheds in the
borough, being one less than in the previous year. These arc registered for
110 cows.
They have been kept under inspection by the food inspectors, 61 inspections
having been made during the year.
Milkshops and Dairies.—Reference was made in the last Annual Report to
the unsatisfactory conditions under which milk was being sold by retail in
the borough, and to the fact that the powers conferred upon the Council in
regard to the registration of milksellers by Sec. 5 of the London County
Council General Powers) Act, 1908, had not been put into operation. A
report on the subject was presented to the Public Health Committee on 7th
January, 1914, and although much of this was set out in last year's report it
appears well, for the sake of completeness, to reproduce it here in full. The
report was as follows:—
METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF ST. PANCRAS.
Public Health Department,
Town Hall, Pancras Road, N.W.
7th January, 1914.
To the Public Health Committee.
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
In accordance with your resolution of the 6th December, 1913, I present for
your consideration, this report upon the conditions under which milk is sold by retail
from shops in the Borough, and certain recommendations in regard to the matter.
A special investigation has been made during the past few months into this question,
in the course of which every milkshop has been visited by food inspectors, and the
particulars for each shop entered up separately on a special schedule drawn up for the
purpose. The results of this enquiry are given below.
The items relating to the quantity of milk sold are expressed iu imperial gallons, and
are based on estimates as to the amount of the daily sale which have been made by the
shopkeepers themselves (except in a few instances where the estimate has had to be
made by the inspectors). No account has been taken of the amount of milk delivered
on "milk-rounds," the figures given relating exclusively to milk sold " over the counter."
It may be explained that the term "dairy" is used to indicate a shop where the
principal goods sold are milk and dairy-produce such as butter and eggs, but where also
in many cases various articles of grocery, etc., are also sold.
The total number of registered milkshops actually selling milk by retail in the
Borough has proved to be 389. In addition to these there are a few registered premises
from which no milk is sold by retail over the counter.
The amount of milk sold daily by retail in these shops, otherwise than by milk-rounds,
appears to be about 1,460 gallons.
The numerical result of this enquiry include the following items:—
No. of shops where milk is sold by retail by registered persons 389
Total quantity of milk sold per diem 1460 gallons.
Average do. do. per milksliop 3.8 „
No. of shops in which one gallon or less of milk is sold per diem 93 or 24 per cent.
Do. between one or two gallons do. 109 „ 28 „
Do. over two gallons do. 187 „ 48 „
