Dairies, Cowsheds, and Milk Shops.
Cowsheds.—There are 6 licensed cowsheds in the Borough, registered for 134-
cows, there having been on alteration in the list of licensed cowsheds made
during the year. The list was set out on page 176 of the Annual Report
for 1912.
These have been regularly inspected by the food inspectors, 84 inspections
having been made during the vear.
Milk Shops and Dairies.—Sec. 5 of the London County Council (General
Powers) Act, 1908, enables the sanitary authority, subject to certain provisos,
to remove from the register, or refuse to register, any person carrying on the
trade of dairyman or purveyor of milk upon premises which are in their
opinion for any reason unsuitable for the sale of milk therein.
For several reasons, amongst which was the expectation of a new Milk and
Dairies Bill becoming law; this new power was not put into force in St. Pancras
until 1913. Before his illness and death Dr. Sykes had collected certain
information on the matter, but further action was then interrupted.
During the autumn of 1913 a special inquiry was instituted into all shops
in the Borough where milk was sold. For this purpose an enquiry schedule
was drawn up, and the details tilled in separately for each shop by the three
food inspectors who carried out the necessary visiting.
It was found that (in November) the total number of registered milk shops
actually selling milk by retail in the Borough was 389.
The amount of milk sold daily by retail in these shops otherwise than by
milk-rounds, proved to be about 1,460 imperial gallons (based upon the
estimates of their daily sales made by the shopkeepers themselves).
