REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Year 1913.
Part I.— GENERAL STATISTICS.
In this Report the year 1913 is taken to be the 53 weeks ending 3rd
January, 1914. The fact that the year consisted of 53 weeks instead of 52
weeks is considered in the calculation of all rates, which are therefore comparable
with those of other years.
POPULATION.
The estimated population* of the Borough at the middle of 1913, upon
which the rates in this report are based, is 218,387.
The Registrar-General's estimate is 214,330. This is based on the
assumption that the decrease in population which took place between the
censuses of 1901 and 1911 has since continued at the same rate.
The returns of the Rating Department give the number of houses used as
dwellings (less "empties") to be 22,542 for 1911, and 22,606 for 1913, a
slight increase instead of a decrease. It has therefore been considered
advisable to take the 1911 census population for the 1913 estimate, rather
than that of the Registrar-General.
MARRIAGES.
The number of marriages celebrated in St. Pancras during 1913 was 2165,
equal to a rate of 9.73 per 1000 population.
* The estimate given in the last two quarterly reports for 1913 has been revised.
