DISINFECTANTS—STANDARDISATION.
In June, 1907, H.M. Office of Works decided that Contractors would not
be invited to tender for proprietory Disinfectants unless the undermentioned
conditions were complied with: —
"The disinfectant will be examined chemically and bacteriologically.
The chemical examination will be made at the Government Laboratory
free of charge. For the bacteriological examination the fee must be
borne by the proprietor of the disinfectant submitted, and be deposited
with the application for approval."
"A scheme for the bacteriological examination of disinfectants has
been drawn up, and the examination of all disinfectants submitted for
test will be conducted strictly in accordance with such scheme. Disinfectants
will be tested against B. typhosus with Phenol as a standard."
"On the completion of the chemical and bacteriological examination,
the applicant will be informed whether or not the disinfectant has been
approved, but in no case will details of the results of the examination be
furnished."
In tendering for disinfectants the Corporation of the City of London
require compliance with the following specification:—
"Any disinfectant fluid may be tendered for, provided that its
guaranteed bacteriological efficiency is expressed in terms of absolute
Phenol (100 per cent.), as determined by the Ridcal-Walker method,
when working with vigorous cultures of bacillus typhosus, and that it is
homogeneous, mixible with water in all proportions, does not separate
out on standing, and runs freely from the cask at all times."
