3. Comparing the registered deaths under one year of age with the
notification of births.
4. Selecting from the births the most suitable eases to visit, commencing
with the poorest houses in the poorest streets.
5. In regard to the cases visited :—
(a) Inquiring into the hygienic, sanitary, and domestic circumstances
of the mother and infant as set out in the Inquiry
Form.
(b) Imparting general information to the mother, including the
importance of breast feeding and of seeking medical advice before
weaning from, the breast.
(c) Distributing to the necessitous poor cards of introduction
(noting the fact on the Inquiry Form).
(i) In case of desire for knowledge or to wean, to the
School for Mothers, and, in case of derangement of
health, to medical practitioners, hospitals, etc.
(ii) In case of requiring temporary assistance or of
poverty, to the School for Mothers (Dinners for
Suckling Mothers), to the Charity Organisation
Society, or to the Guardians of the Poor.
(iii) In case of want of work by other members of the
family, to the Employment Exchange or the offices
of the Distress Committee.
B.-PHILANTHROPIC.
Centre—The Babirs' Welcome and School for Mathers,
6 and 7, Chalton Street, Euston Road, N. W.
1. Consultations and weighings (of babies and mothers).
2. Dinners for Suckling Mothers.
3. Lessons on food, and food values and prices. (Especially the feeding
of suckling mothers).
4. Classes on simple cookery. (For young wives and all mothers).
5. Lessons for mothers and young wives:—
(i) In the cutting out and making of babies' clothes.
(ii) In the preparation for and care of babies.
(iii) In housewifery and domestic health.
6. Provident Maternity Club. For (1) Doctor or Midwife; (2) Baby
Clothes ; (3) Extra help during confinement; (4) Extra nourishment.
7. Fathers' Evening Conferences on the duties of the father to the
mother, the babe, the children, and the home (coffee handed
round ; smoking allowed).
Outdoor—Visits to the homes of mothers attending the “ Welcome.”
