§ 4.—REPORTS OF THE FOOD INSPECTORS.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I beg to report on my work in the Northern and Eastern Divisions of
the Borough for the year ended December 31st, 1907, as inspector of Food and
Food-places.
Markets.— I made 1908 inspections of the various market places, including
butchers', porkbutchers', poulterers', fishmongers', and greengrocers' shops, and
stalls, and the following articles have been destroyed, being diseased or unsound
and unfit for food.
1 pig's carcass.
2 crates of pears.
14 tubs of strawberries.
3 tubs of raspberries.
6½ cwt. of skate.
2 cwts. of herrings.
1 cwt. of haddocks.
24 boxes of tomatoes.
Bullocks' and sheeps' lungs and livers.
Food Makers.—I made 405 visits to the premises where sausages, ice cream,
tripe, &c., are made, and with few exceptions, found the premises satisfactory
and the food sound.
Licensed Slaughterhouses.— There are now only 6 private slaughterhouses in
my district, one having been removed owing to the licensee not making the
usual application for the renewal, preferring to do this instead of having the
application opposed by this Authority for an infringement of the By-laws. I
made 232 inspections, during which I saw 703 sheep, 96 bullocks, 126 pigs,
47 lambs, and 10 calves, killed and dressed, and such organs as on examination
were found to be diseased I had removed, by the written request of the owners,
under Sub-section 8 of Section 47 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
Licensed Cow-sheds.—I paid 55 visits to the licensed cow-sheds (3) and on a
few occasions I had to call the owner's attention to the By-laws.
Milkshops.— I made 517 inspections of milkshops and with few exceptions
found the milk vessels generally satisfactory. During these visits I found 34
persons selling milk without being registered in accordance with the Dairies,
Cow-sheds, and Milkshops Orders.
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.— I obtained 325 samples of articles of food and
drugs for analysis by the Public Analyst under these Acts, of which 63 were
adulterated.
Bacteriological Examination.— I took 14 samples of "Nursery" milk for
examination, also 2 samples direct from the cow into sterilized bottles ; for
results please see Dr. Eyre's report.
During the year I attended before the Magistrates at the Police Courts
82 times in the discharge of my duties.
I am, Sir, Yours obediently,
Harry R. Child.
