The London County Council requires midwives practising in the County of
London to send to the County Council a weekly return of the births attended
by them in the following form:—
LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL.
Name and address of Midwife
List of Births attended (by a Registered Midwife) during the week ending
Saturday, the day of 190
N.B.--Births occurring in Public Institutions should not be included.
This form should not be used for any communication in the nature of
a letter.
Name of Patient. Address of Patient. Date of Confinement. Whether child still living.
These returns are extracted by the London County Council, and a weekly
return of the births attended in each London Borough is kindly sent by the
County Council to each Borough Council, on the same form with the alteration
of the words "name and address of Midwife" to "name of Metropolitan
Borough Council," and of the words "a Registered Midwife" to "Registered
Midwives."
It will be observed that the name (if any) and the sex of the child are not
stated, nor are the name and surname of the father, nor the rank or profession
of the father stated. This gives rise to some little difficulty in making
inquiries, not so much in regard to the sex of the child, as in reference to the
legitimacy, which is a delicate subject difficult to handle directly, but which
indirectly is revealed in the Registrar-General's Form, approved by the Local
Government Board. A midwife can probably form her own conclusion, and it
would be valuable if she would state the sex of the child and the name of the
"husband."
Here follow in tabular form the results of the Registration of Births with
the Registrars, and of Notification by Midwives of those births attended
by them.
