Canal Boats Act.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
During the year I have inspected 65 dwelling boats, and discovered one
case of mixing of the sexes of prohibited ages, and one boat in bad repair and
in an insanitary condition. I served notices on the owners of the boats, which
notices were complied with. There has not been any case of infectious disease
or other illness on any of the boats inspected during the year, and the Canal
Boats Regulations have been well observed by the boat dwellers.
I am, Sir, yours obediently,
J. Osborne,
Canal Boat Inspector.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I beg to report on my work in the Northern and Eastern Divisions of
the Borough for the year ended December 31st, 1905.
Markets.-—I made 1,627 inspections of the various market places, including
butchers', poik butchers', poulterers', fishmongers', greengrocers' shops and
stalls, and when necessary made applications to the Magistrates sitting at the
Police Courts to condemn and order the destruction of certain unsound food.
The following articles of food were destroyed, being unfit for the food of man:—
15 cwt. of strawberries.
9 cwt. of tomatoes.
2 cwt. of fish (skate).
6 cwt. of haddocks.
42 lbs. of plaice.
2 pigs.
2 sheep.
1 lamb.
½ pigs head.
12½ lbs. salt beef.
And a quantity of oranges.
Food Makers.—I made 280 visits of the premises where sausages, ice-cream,
extract of meat, tripe, &c., are made, and, with few exceptions, found the
premises satisfactory and the food sound.
Licensed Slaughter-houses.—There are 8 private slaughter-houses in the
division, and I made 269 inspections, during which I saw 884 sheep, 123
bullocks, 123 pigs. 45 lambs, and 3 calves killed and dressed, and such carcases
and organs as on examination were found to be diseased I had removed by the
written request of the owners, under Sub-section 8 of Section 47 of the Public
Health (London) Act, 1891.
