Railway Nuisances.—I inspected the sanitary conveniences at all the railway
stations in the Borough used by the male public. I did not discover any
nuisances without testing the drains or soil pipes. Some of the companies let
these conveniences out by contract, while others have their own employees as
attendants.
I also made a number of observations of locomotives at the sidings of the
Railway Companies with a view of suppressing the smoke nuisance.
Foreign Arrivals.—I also visited the contacts notified by the Port Sanitary
Authorities, who had been in contact with infectious disease abroad or on
board ship, or had arrived from an infected area. I experienced some
difficulty at times in finding the persons, as very frequently a wrong or false
address was given in another Ward or Sub-Division of the Borough or
elsewhere.
Offensive Trade Premises.—I made 35 visits to these premises. During the
hot weather complaints were received of the smell from the vans calling at one
of these premises, and the proprietor speedily made permanent arrangements
to have the melting done in the country during the summer months.
Fried Fish Places,—I visited all the fried fish places and rag and bone
stores quarterly, and served notices where necessary to abate nuisances. The
power of the Local Authority over the management of these businesses is
limited owing to the absence of by-laws or regulations.
I am, yours obediently,
W. Gr. Auger.
