The two following tables show the mortality from tuberculous diseases in each
of the two sexes in each of the two countries in proportion to 10,000 persons
of the population in each of the census years, remembering that in Prussia the
census is taken every five years and in England every ten.

The accompanying diagram shows the above tables graphically represented.
The differences in the mortality curves are at once apparent. It is seen
that, whereas in England the female mortality has fallen more rapidly than
the male, in Prussia the reverse has taken place. This is because in England
since 1866 more attention has been devoted to the healthiness of the dwelling
where the woman benefits more than the man, whereas in Prussia the man has
benefited more than the woman by the German law passed in 1883 providing
for the compulsory assurance of workmen against sickness, and the special
attention directed to the treatment of consumption, a disease to which the
greatest amount of sickness amongst working men is due.

If now we compare in the following table the general mortality from all diseases in each of the two sexes in each of the two countries, during the same Census years, we obtain another aspect of the results:—
