Whooping Cough.
This disease was not so prevalent either in London or in
St. Pancras as in past years. The Registrar General states
in his Annual Summary that "the death-rate from Whooping
cough was the lowest on record in London."
The number of deaths, 122, recorded for St. Pancras is the
lowest since 1874, and is 76.5 less than the average of the
preceding ten years.
In 1881 whooping cough caused in St. Pancras 24.2 deaths
per 1000 deaths from all causes, and in London 24.1. Both in
St. Pancras and London there were 5.1 deaths to every 10,000
of population living.
The following table shows the relative proportion of deaths
from this disease in the different sub-districts when the deaths
occurring in institutions are referred back to the districts to
which they belong. For two deaths occurring in the Workhouse
no address could be found, and they are therefore
excluded.

Diarhœa.
During 1881 there were 211 deaths from diarrhoea, of these
195 were of children under one year of age.
When compared with the death-rate from this disease in
London, whether reckoned as a proportion of total deaths from
all causes upon the population, St. Pancras suffered more
heavily from this disease than London during 1881, for the
former method of calculation gives 421 for St. Pancras, and
86.9 for London, and the latter method 8.8 for St. Pancras,
and 7.8 for London.
