TWENTY-SIXTH ANNUAL REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
Being the Report for the Year. 1881.
TO THE VESTRY OF ST. PANCRAS.
Gentlemen,
When the Census was taken on April 1st, 1881, the enumerated
population of St. Pancras was found to be 236,209.
There has been, therefore, an annual increase of only .66 per
cent. upon the enumerated population of the previous Census of
1871, whereas the annual average increase during the previous
decade was 1.1 per cent.; St. Pancras, therefore, has during
the last ten years increased at about half the rate of the
preceding ten years.
The rate of increase has of course varied in the different
districts, thus, in the Kentish Town district in which, since
the last Census, 19,289 persons have been added to the population,
the increase has been at the rate of 2.71 per cent.
each year, while in the Gray's Inn Road and Regent's Park
districts, the increase has been only .84 and .28 per cent.
respectively, representing an increase of 1026 in the former,
and 915 in the latter. The other districts show a decrease;
Somers Town has lost as many as 4164 of its population,
chiefly owing to the demolition of houses situated
in the area acquired by the Midland Railway Company.
If this loss of population had been distributed evenly
over the ten years, it would have represented an annual
decrease of 1.08 per cent. of the population. In Tottenham
Court Road and Camden Town the population has been reduced
by 1611, and 632 persons respectively, being equal to .55
per cent. each year in the former and .29 in the latter.
The increase in the number of inhabited houses has not
kept pace with the increase of the population ; thus, in 1871,
there was an average of 9.l persons to each inhabited house ;
in 1881 this average has increased to 9.5. In the different
sub-districts there is considerable variation in the proportion
of population to houses. In the Tottenham Court Road district
there were, in 1881,11.4 persons to each inhabited house ;
in Somers Town, 10.7 ; in Camden Town, 10.3 ; in Gray's Inn
Road, 10.2; in Regent's Park, 8.9; and in Kentish Town,
5.7.
