Smallpox and cholera—Surveillance
Under the Public Health (Aircraft) Regulations, 1966 and the
Public Health (Ships) Regulations, 1966, persons arriving in this
country from areas abroad where smallpox is endemic and who are
not in possession of a valid international certificate of vaccination
against smallpox must be placed under surveillance for a specific
period. During the year, 43 such persons who were proceeding to
addresses in the Borough were kept under observation.
Similarly, in relation to another quarantinable disease, cholera,
visits were made to 253 persons arriving from infected areas, as
mentioned earlier in the Report.
Immigrants
The number of immigrants taking up residence in the Borough
during the year was 858, of whom the public health inspectors
were able to contact 518, so that any necessary advice could be
given regarding registration with a family doctor and the desirability
of having a chest X-ray.
