As a result of the progressive policy in this Borough in the
secondment of staff for training we have been able to increase our
proportion of trained staff during the year and this has undoubtedly
helped to attract qualified staff to come to work with us in
Wandsworth.
Student Training
In 1966 five Younghusband students from the North Western
Polytechnic were placed in the Borough for 5½ months each. In
addition, six students were placed for periods of a few weeks,
two from the London School of Economics' Social Science course,
two from the University of London's extension course and two
students from abroad as a preliminary to their joining the Mental
Health Course at the London School of Economics. Two students
were placed for a week's observation placement by the London
School of Economics' Mental Health Course.
Twelve nurses from Springfield Hospital Nurse Training School
spent one week in the mental health office. Arrangements were
made for nurses from West Park Hospital and St. George's Hospital
to spend an afternoon visiting with the mental health social
workers. A nurse from Tooting Bee Hospital also spent a week
in the mental health office with a view to gaining some knowledge
of the mental health service as a preliminary to starting a
domiciliary nursing service from the hospital.
We are steadily gaining a high reputation for the quality and
variety of training which we are able to offer students in mental
health and we receive constant requests from Universities, Colleges,
Nurse Training Schools, etc., to send students to us for training.
