WANDSWORTH TUBERCULOSIS CARE COMMITTEE
ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1966
There have been many changes during the year.
Mr. Bignall, our Hon. Treasurer, has retired. We were sorry
to lose him and we thank him for his guidance and for keeping
our funds in a satisfactory position. To his successor, Mr. H. J.
Bates, we extend our cordial welcome. Dr. Garland is no longer
able to attend our meetings as his duties prevent it.
In March, Councillor Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. J. Dixon and Mrs.
M. Cormack were appointed to represent the London Borough
of Wandsworth on the Committee. Mrs. Cassidy resigned in June
also Miss Malleson who on her retirement from the Family Welfare
Association, retired from our Committee and Miss G. Knight has
now been appointed to take her place.
There has been no decline in the number of cases coming before
us. In fact the number has slightly increased. We have had many
calls for assistance, in such items as clothing, holidays and money
to satisfy a variety of needs. At Christmas we gave the usual
presents to patients and their families and that involved an expenditure
of £128. Some of our cases require immediate assistance,
some a monetary grant, and some help over long term periods.
The Handicraft Class continues to meet weekly under Mrs.
Sadler, the Instructress, and this is very much enjoyed as a social
occasion by the patients who attend, and it also turns out some
very beautiful and useful work for our Sale.
Our thanks are due to Mr. and Mrs. Ireland and Mrs. Morgan,
who accompanied the patients on outings to Hastings in May and
to Brighton in September.
Our Autumn Sale and Draw, which is our chief money raising
event of the year, was held on November 5th at the Civic Suite,
Town Hall, Wandsworth, and opened by the Mayor, Councillor
A. A. Loughton, J.P.
The Appeal Letter was sent out in May, but the response was
disappointing. However, a number of generous donations were
received during the course of the year.
We much regret the resignation of Mrs. Tweed as she is leaving
the neighbourhood. For many years she has been a very energetic
personality on our Committee. We wish her a happy future in
her new home.
I would like to place on record my thanks to all who have
assisted and co-operated with us during the year, including the
W.V.S. and Officers of the Ministry of Social Security and Labour
Exchanges. To my Vice-Chairman, Hon. Treasurer, and all the
Committee, for their interest and help. I give my grateful thanks
also, to Miss Oakey, Miss Macdonald and Mrs. Gilbert.
DEODORA CASSELS,
Chairman.
