REPORT OF THE WORK OF THE PUBLIC
ANALYST FOR 1961
The Public Analyst, J. E. Woodhead, B.Sc., F.R.I.C., Ph.C.,
reports as follows: By virtue of the requirements of the Food and
Drugs Act, 1955, 1,000 samples were examined during the year
ended 31st December, 1961, 967 were articles of food and the
remaining 33 drugs. All were submitted by the Council's Food
Inspectors, 240 having been taken with the formalities required by
the Act and 760 informally.
Samples of the following substances were analysed: fats (butter,
margarine, etc.), 40; beverages (cocoa, coffee, tea, etc.), 48; cereal
preparations, 40; cheese products, 32; confectionery, 77; cream, 22;
fish (canned, etc.), 30; fruit (canned and dried), 32; ice-cream, 2;
meat products (including sausages), 84; milk, 260; pickles and condiments
(including spices), 65; preserves, 70; soup, 40; vegetables,
42; aspirin tablets, 5; Beecham's powders, 3; glaubers salts, 7; ointments,
6; linctus, 8; tincture of quinine, 3.
