REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH FOR 1961
Puerperal Pyrexia
During the year 98 cases were notified, of which 94 occurred in
hospital and four at home. Thirty-four of the hospital notifications
referred to patients whose home addresses were outside the Borough.
Information was also received of 27 cases, referring to Wandsworth
residents whose confinements took place in hospitals located in other
Metropolitan boroughs.
Sonne Dysentery
Only one outbreak occurred during the year; this comprised 19
cases at a day nursery in the Borough.
The bulk of the remaining cases investigated were single unrelated
cases.
The final overall total of 93 cases for the year, although considerably
lower than the previous year, when 315 cases were confirmed,
does not reflect fully the amount of work involved in visiting and
following up. It was often considered necessary to arrange for the
bacteriological examination of stools specimens from family contacts,
and many other suspected cases reported were investigated but subsequently
not confirmed.
Influenza, Acute Influenzal Pneumonia and Acute Primary Pneumonia
Acute influenzal pneumonia and acute primary pneumonia are the
notifiable forms of pneumonia, and in 1961 96 of the former and 122
of the latter were notified, as compared with 15 and 124 respectively
for the previous year.
Deaths attributable to acute influenzal pneumonia were 28; this
figure is classified under influenza in the death table on page 12.
Acute primary pneumonia accounted for 45 deaths, making a total
of 325 deaths for all forms of pneumonia compared with 301 in 1960.
Deaths in 1960 from acute influenzal pneumonia and acute
primary pneumonia were respectively four and 26.
Malaria
One recurrent case was notified, that of a person who had been
living in India.
Erysipelas
Twenty-four cases were notified.
