VITAL STATISTICS
Population
Population figures obtained from the 1961 census have now been
published by the Registrar-General. The population of Wandsworth
is now given as 346,790, a considerable increase not only on the
previous (1951) Census figures but also on the interim yearly estimates
of the Registrar-General's office since then.
All the rates used in this Report and the approximate population
shown in Table I of each Parliamentary division are based on the
new figure.

Births
The total number of births belonging to the Borough registered
during 1961 was 5,878, consisting of 3,034 males and 2,844 females.
The number for 1960 was 5,540.
The crude birth-rate was 169 per 1,000 persons living compared
with 16.3 for 1960. The adjusted rate works out at 162 after taking
into account the area comparability factor supplied by the RegistrarGeneral.
The birth-rate for England and Wales as a whole was 17.4
and for London 18.7.
Six hundred and thirty illegitimate births took place in the Borough
compared with 522 in 1960.
