VITAL STATISTICS
Population
The civilian population at the middle of the year was estimated
by the Registrar-General to be 337,600 and all the rates used in this
Report are based on this figure.
Table I shows the approximate population of each Parliamentary
Division, based on the above estimation.

Births
The total number of births belonging to the Borough registered
during 1956 was 4,812, consisting of 2,478 males and 2,334 females.
The number for 1955 was 4,623.
The crude birth-rate was 14.25 per 1,000 persons living compared
with 13.73 for 1955. The adjusted rate works out at 13.53 after
taking into account the area comparability factor supplied by the
Registrar-General.
Three hundred and fifty one illegitimate births took place in the
Borough compared with 319 in 1955.
