Infantile Mortality
The number of deaths under one year was 84, the infantile
mortality-rate being 17-4 per 1,000 births. This compares with a rate
of 24 for 1955, 19 for 1954, and is the lowest rate ever recorded in the
Borough.
For the ten years ended 1946 the average infantile mortality rate
was 43 while for the ten years ended 1956 the average rate was 23.
Maternal Mortality
Four deaths occurred from accidents and diseases of pregnancy or
child-birth. This is equivalent to a rate of 0.81 for 1,000 live and
still births, compared with 0.85 in 1955.
