REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH FOR 1953
Infantile Mortality
The number of deaths under one year was 104, the infantile
mortality rate being 23 per 1,000 births. This compares with a rate
of 20 for 1952 and 23 for 1951.
For the ten years ending 1943 the average infantile mortality rate
was 49 while for the ten years ending 1953 the average rate was 28.
Maternal Mortality
Two deaths occurred from accidents and diseases of pregnancy or
child-birth. This is equivalent to a rate of 0.43 for 1,000 live and still
births, compared with 0.67 in 1952.
