INFANTILE MORTALITY.
The total number of deaths under one year was 288, 56 in
Clapham, 18 in Putney, 44 in Balham, 37 in Streatham, 4L in
Tooting, and 92 in Wandsworth. As the number of births was
5,475, the Infantile Mortality was 52.5 per 1,000 births.
This is the lowest number of deaths under one year of age
that has ever occurred in the Borough, and the mortality rate is
consequently the lowest recorded. It compares with an average
of 78 for the last 10 years.
The number of deaths among legitimate infants was 259 to
5,254 births—a mortality of 49 per 1,000 births.
The number of deaths among illegitimate infants was 22 to
221 births—a mortality of 131 per 1,000 births.
This low number and rate is due to a marked fall in the number
of deaths from Measles, Premature Birth and Congenital Malformations,
Pneumonia, and Convulsions; there was, however, an
increase in the number of deaths from Diarrhoea and Enteritis.
Table VII. gives the corrected number of deaths, and the
cause of death, at various periods up to one year of age.
