Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Sputum Examinations.—The number of sputum examinations
made during the year shows a large increase on previous years,
1,310 specimens being examined, compared with 1,054 in 1921,
601 in 1920, and 204 in 1919. Of these, 260 or 19-85 per cent,
gave a positive result. The increased number is due, mainly, to
more frequent examinations of pulmonary cases giving a negative
result, a procedure which is very necessary in order to arrive at an
accurate opinion of their condition.
Cases of all Years Compared.—Table XXXIV. shows the
number of new cases and total attendances at each of the Dispensaries
for the ten years during which they have been open.

Classification of Cases.—In Table XXXV. all patients examined
during the ten years have been placed in one or other of three
groups:—
(1) Definite cases of tuberculosis—
This group is divided according to the site of the
lesion, into pulmonary cases (the lungs being affected)
