Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Rateable Value.
The rateable value of the Borough, on the 6th April, 1922, was
£2,274,272, and the estimated value of a penny rate was £9,157.
Housing.
It was found at the Census of 1921 that the total number of
houses structurally separate for habitation was 62,540, and the
total number of rooms occupied was 373,204, the average number of
persons per house was 5.2, and the average number of persons per
room was .87.
There are only three other Boroughs in London, viz., Lewisham,
Kensington and Hampstead, where the average number of persons
per room was smaller, the average for the whole of London being
1.07.
If these statistics are correct it shows that in the Borough of
Wandsworth there cannot be so much overcrowding as in some
of the other Boroughs.
There has been some addition to the housing accommodation
during the year by the erection of new houses (1) by the London
County Council; (2) by the Borough Council; and (3) by private
enterprise. The total number erected and occupied was 846,
and the number in course of erection at the end of the year was 48.
The action taken by the Borough Council is referred to in
more detail in previous reports.
