attracted anyone's attention. Apparently the reason that they
had been discovered at Fountain Road School is that the Head
Teacher makes a practice of having the hands of the children
inspected daily to see if they are clean.
" I am not prepared to explain the exact cause of the peeling,
but I am satisfied that it is not Scarlet Fever.
" It is interesting that there has been no case of Scarlet Fever
notified among children attending these schools (excluding these
peeling cases) for three months."
Diphtheria.
435 cases were notified, (103 in Clapham, 30 in Putney, 96 in
Streatham, 82 in Tooting and 124 in Wandsworth).
The total number of deaths was 37, (11 in Clapham, none in
Putney, eight in Streatham, seven in Tooting and 11 in Wandsworth),
and the death-rate per 1,000 was .12
The number of cases notified per 1,000 of population was
1.44, and the case mortality was 8.5 per cent.

Borough in which multiple cases occurred is shown in the following
Table.
