In Clapham, out of a total of 74 cases, 33 or 44 per cent,
occurred in children attending school; in Putney, of 37 cases, 12
or 32 per cent.; in Streatham, of 140 cases, 73 or 52 per cent.; in
Tooting, of 206 cases, 95 or 46 per cent.; in Wandsworth, of 266
cases, 139 or 52 per cent.; and in the whole Borough, of 723 cases,
352 were in attendance at schools in the Borough, and 15 at schools
outside the Borough, a total of 367, or 50 per cent.
Of the remaining cases, viz.—356, in 51 or yo per cent., the
diagnosis was incorrect, and 305 or 42 per cent, were not in attendance
at school.
In Clapham the number of cases of Diphtheria in attendance
at school was 33, the greatest number occurring in Haselrigge Road
School, and the next in Bonneville Road School.
In Putney 12 cases were in attendance at schools, four of these
being at St. Mary's School, and four at private schools.
In Streatham, Furzedown Demonstration, with 14 cases was
the highest, and Broadwater Road with eight the next.
In Tooting 95 cases were in attendance at schools, 28 of these
being at Ensham Street, 20 cases at Sellincourt Road, and 19 at
Undine Street Roman Catholic Schools.
In Wandsworth there were 139 cases attending schools, and
these occurred sporadically during the year, the greatest number
occurring during November. In six of the schools only one case
occurred in each, in three two cases, in three three cases, in one
four cases, in two six cases, in one seven cases, in one eight cases,
in two 12 cases, and in one 49 cases, and 11 cases occurred in various
private schools.
The principal school affected in Wandsworth was Swaffield
Road, where 49 cases occurred, one in February, two in March,
three in July, seven in September, 13 in October, 17 in November,
and six in December. In consequence of the outbreak at this school
the following report has been prepared:—
