94 Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Table LIII. is similar to the foregoing, but deals with contacts
only. During the year 302 contacts were examined for the first
time. Of these 214 were under 15 years of age and 88 over. Of the
214 under 15 years of age, 14, or 6.5 per cent. were found to be
tuberculous, and of the 88 over 15 years of age, 39.7 per cent. were
tuberculous.
The examination of contacts is an important part of the work,
and though the percentage of tuberculous cases found is small
amongst children, the prophylactic treatment of the weakly ones,
though not actually suffering from the disease, must be work the
benefit of which will be felt in years to come.
