Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Milk and Cream.
MILK.
895 samples of milk were produced for analysis during the year.
67 or 7.48 per cent. were reported against as being adulterated
or not up to legal standard.
875 samples were purchased officially, of which 67 or 7.6 per
cent. were adulterated, and 20 samples purchased informally, of
which four were reported against.
39 samples were found to contain added water, 26 were deficient
in milk fat, and two were deficient in milk fat and contained added
water.
Proceedings were taken in 34 cases, and in 33 cases the Public
Health Committee, after considering the amount of adulteration
and the circumstances of sale, decided not to prosecute the vendors,
but to take further samples.
17 samples of milk were taken on delivery at various Public
Institutions situated within the Borough. All these samples were
reported to be genuine.
91 samples of milk were procured whilst in transit from the
farmer to the retailer, the samples being taken as the milk arrived
at various railway stations within the Borough, both at mid-night
and mid-day deliveries.
Six samples were reported against as containing extraneous
water, viz.:—2 per cent., 3 per cent., 4 per cent., 4.5 per cent., 6
per cent. and 6 per cent. respectively.
Proceedings were instituted against the farmer of the two last
mentioned samples.
The summonses were dismissed, the farmer having satisfied the
Magistrate that the milk was sold and delivered in the same condition
as it came from the cow.
