flooding. The boundary ditch was also inspected and steps
were taken to have this cleaned out so as to remove any serious
obstruction to the flow of water in the ditch. The land has
now been raised about six feet and consequently no further
flooding can be carried out. The ditch has been inspected on
several occasions since and no nuisance found.
(2)—Special inspections were also made of certain houses and
localities on account of flooding after the severe storm of
June 14th.
The streets chiefly affected were, in Putney—Campion
Street and Upper Richmond Road; in Streatham—Besley
Street, Broadway, Christchurch Road, Hambro Road, High
Road, Hopton Road, Killieser Avenue, Mitcham Lane,
Wellfield Road, Calbourne Road, Fernlea Road, Gosberton
Road, Mayford Road, Ravenslea Road, Rossiter Road, Rowfant
Road, Selkirk Road, and Tantallon Road; in Tooting—Defoe
Road, Furzedown Market, Marlborough House and Mitcham
Road; and in Wandsworth—Bellew Terrace, Earlsfield Road,
Garratt Lane, Headworth Road, Lydden Grove, Maskell Road,
Portinscale Road, Rusholme Road and Summerstown.
Steps were taken at once to remedy the damp conditions
and the officials of the Council both from this Department and
the Surveyors assisted the owners and occupiers of the houses
in every possible way. Many basements were cleansed and
disinfected by the Council's staff, and in about 14 days all the
cases had been satisfactorily dealt with. There was no consequent
illness in any of these houses as far as could be ascertained.
(3)—As in previous years, special inspections were made of several
localities in consequence of complaints of smells from road
gullies and sewer ventilators.
The number of complaints was greater than in the previous
year ; this having been due to the fact that the climatic conditions
were more favourable.
