28 Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The death-rate in England and Wales in 1913 was 13.7 per
1,000, compared with 13.3 in 1912, 14.6 in 1911, and 13.4 in 1910;
in the 96 Great Towns 14.3, compared with 13.8 in 1912, 16.4 in
1911, and 14.3 in 1910; and in the 145 Smaller Towns 12.8, compared
with 12.4, 14.4, and 12.9.
If a comparison is to be made with other places it is necessary
to again correct the corrected rate, viz.:—10.95, for age and sex
distribution.
This is done by multiplying the race by a factor obtained by
dividing the standard death-rate in England and Wales at the
Census of 1911, with the standard death-rate for the Borough at
the same period. This factor has been ascertained to be 1.0045
which gives a rate for this Borough for the year 1913 of 10.99 Per
1,000, compared with 11.03 in 1912, 12.92 in 1911, and 10.90 in
1910.
The following Table shows the factor for correction, the crude
death-rate, the corrected death-rate, and the comparative mortality
figure for London and for the 29 Boroughs, including the
City of London, for the year 1913.
The figures are extracted from the quarterly returns of the
Registrar-General for the year, and are completely corrected as
between individual Metropolitan Boroughs. The rate in Wandsworth
is also corrected for the whole of England and Wales. The
Table is, this year, therefore, only approximately correct, but gives
•a fairly exact estimate of the rates for the year.
