Statement of Work done under the Sale of Food and
Drugs Acts.
During the year 1,849 samples of foods and drugs were submitted
to the Public Analyst for analysis, compared with 1,500 in
1912, 927 in 1911, and 1,060 in 1910.
Of the 1,849 samples analysed 949 were purchased as test or
informal samples, while 900 were purchased officially.
Of the 900 official samples submitted for analysis 121 or 13.4
per cent, were reported to be adulterated or not up to standard,
and of those samples which were purchased informally or as test
samples 84, or 8-8 per cent, were found adulterated or not up to
standard.
The total adulterations reported were 205, or 11-o per cent, of
the samples submitted, compared with 18.o per cent, in 1912,
13.2 per cent, in 1911, 9.05 per cent, in 1910, and 6.89 per cent,
in 1909.
The percentage of milk samples found to be adulterated was
9.5, compared with 10.39 in 1912, 9.3 in 1911, and 7.4 in 1910.
In 84 out of the 121 cases in which adulterations were detected
in the official samples proceedings were instituted against the
vendor, compared with 86 in 1912, 77 in 1911, and 55 in 1910.
The total amount received in penalties under the above Acts
during the year amounted to £95 7s. 6d., and the costs to £48,
making a total of £143 7s. 6d., compared with £244 14s. in 1912,
£299 19s. 9d. in 1911, and £154 11s. in 1910.
