Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The father, mother and two other children, are in good
health, and the sanitary condition of the house was good.
Both cases are in the Grove Hospital and recovering,
although in the case of K.B. the symptoms are most marked,
and the paralysis of both lower limbs almost complete.
Neither of these cases had any connection with case No. 3,
which is the same neighbourhood.
9.—B.G., aged 11 weeks, residing at Colmer Road, Streatham,
notified from Great Ormonde Street Hospital on the 19th
November. The first symptoms of the disease seem to have
occurred about the 12th September, when the child was
only four weeks old, and it had never been outside the house
since its birth.
The father, mother and five other children are in good
health, although a brother aged 4 years had an attack of
Pneumonia four months ago and still has a slight cough.
The sanitary condition of the premises was good. This
patient had been seen by two medical men in the district,
previous to being sent to the Great Ormonde Street Hospital,
but was not notified by either.
10.—R.W., aged 4½ years, residing at Crealock Street, Wandsworth,
notified from the Victoria Hospital on the 18th
November. The first symptoms appeared about the 10th
November, and she was removed from the Victoria Hospital
to the Grove Fever Hospital on the 17th November. This
case is a very mild one, having now only slight paralysis of
the right leg.
The sanitary condition of the house was good, although
a few fleas were noted on the occasion of the first visit.
All the other members of the family, father, mother and
five children are in good health
"There seems to be no doubt that all the cases were definite
cases of Polio-Myelitis, although the fatal case might more correctly
be described as one of Polio-Encephalitis. I have personally seen
six of the patients, Nos. 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 10, and verified the diagnosis.
