Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
There were 1,764 out of the 3,775 mothers we visited who had
employed midwives, a considerably larger number than in the
previous year, the proportion being higher in Balham and Tooting
than in 1912.
There were 105 mothers who went into Institutions or the
Workhouse for the confinement. 20 mothers had employed the
services of unregistered midwives, and in nearly every case these
were neighbours or relations called in in an emergency.
The sanitary defects found in the homes of the mothers during
the coarse of our work have been remedied, or if requiring structural
work, referred to you.
96 intimation notices were served, and six statutory notices
were required."
