Metropolis, but if the constitution of the population and the number
of open spaces in the Borough be taken into consideration the rate
should be lower than nearly all the other Metropolitan Boroughs.
Again, the reduction in the mortality in the Borough, compared
with the decennial average was only 7.4 per cent., while the
reduction in the Metropolis was 13 per ccnt.
In Edinburgh, according to the report of the Medical Officer
of Health, the mortality had been reduced 45 per cent, during the
last 20 years, this period corresponding almost exactly with the
time the Tuberculosis Dispensary in that City has been in operation.
The treatment by Tuberculin is now being tried in the majority
of these dispensaries, but whether this will prove as satisfactory
as the supporters of the treatment allege, cannot yet be definitely
stated. As far as present experience goes the treatment is of
great value in early cases, and I have from personal observation
been able to verify this in a number of cases both in private practice
and in dispensaries.
Compared with London as a whole the mortality was "91 per
1,000 compared with 1.34, while the only other Boroughs with a
lower rate were Hampstead with "61, and Lewisham with "64
per 1,000.
