METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF WANDSWORTH.
Population. Area. Rateable Value.
311,402. 9,199 acres. £2,155,122.
To Alderman Archibald Davis Dawnay, J.P.
We, the Aldermen and Councillors of the Metropolitan Borough of
Wandsworth, hereby express our high appreciation of your valuable services
as Mayor during the year November, 1910—November. 1911, being the third
successive year in which you have served that Office.
The past year has been memorable as being that of the Coronation of
Their Majesties King George V. and Queen Mary. In connection therewith
it was your duty and privilege to be in attendance on the 22nd June at Ihe
Coronation in Westminster Abbey; and on the following day, in company
with the nine other Mayors of South London Boroughs, to present to their
Majesties a combined Loyal Address from those Boroughs on the occasion of
the Royal Progress through I.ondon.
We recall the arduous labours which you undertook in arranging for the
Public Entertainments and Festivities given to 51,000 children in this Borough
in celebration of Their Majesties' Coronation, at one of which, held in the
grounds adjoining the Royal Hospital for Incurables at West Hill, Wandsworth,
you had the distinguished honour of receiving Their Royal Highnesses
the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, who gave to the children there assembled
gracious messages from Their Majesties. These festivities were rendered
particularly memorable by the specially struck Coronation Medals which
you generously presented to the Council, to its Members, to the children
and to man}' other inhabitants of the Borough.
It is with great pleasure that we are able to congratulate you upon the
success of your appeal for public subscriptions for the Borough of Wandsworth
Memorial Statue to His late Majesty King Edward VII., which has been
recently erected at Tooting Broadway.
We must also allude to the enterprise shown by you in the establishment
of the Inter-Borough Rifle Contest, which has had the effect of greatly
stimulating the interest taken in Miniature Rifle Shooting, and has brought
about most pleasant social relations between the residents in the several
Boroughs in and near the Metropolis. The handsome Challenge Cup,
generously provided by you, was appropriately won in the first year's contest
by the Team from this Borough.
In all the matters to which we have referred, and on the numerous other
occasions when you have represented this Borough, you have most worthily
upheld the dignity and importance of the high position to which you were
unanimously re-elected by us a year ago, and we acknowledge with gratitude
the very zealous and successful manner in which the heavy and important
duties of your Office have been discharged, and the generous hospitalitv
extended by you to all classes and to every part of the Borough.
