Swimming
Competitions
for School
Children.
101. Swimming competitions for school children were held at
the Wandsworth Baths on the 14th October, and a
free pass to the second-class bath, available during
the following year, was awarded to the successful
boy or girl from each school. The competitions are open to boys
and girls from schools in the Borough attending the baths for
instruction in swimming, the passes are available out of school
hours and before seven o'clock in the evening. A large number of
children and their parents were present, and the Mayor presided.
There are 63 elementary schools in the Borough, 30
departments send pupils to the baths for instruction in swimming,
and all entered for the competitions. The number of children
taking part in the competitions was 138—68 boys and 70 girls.
Storage of
Cycles.
102. Several complaints having been received of cycles being
stolen from the cycle room at the Wandsworth
Baths, the Council decided to undertake the
custody of cycles brought there by bathers, and to make a charge
of one penny therefor. The receipts and the increased number of
bathers who cycle to the baths show that the arrangement is fully
appreciated by persons visiting the baths.
Wandsworth
Baths.
103. An improvement has been carried out at the Wandsworth
Baths by covering in a small passage between
the entrances to the first and second class swimming
baths, which has proved a great convenience, especially when galas
are held. A doorway has also been made between the first and
second class baths, so that the second class bath can now be
used for dressing purposes on these occasions.
Swimming
Baths.
104. An additional exit has been provided at the southern
end of the gallery in the first class swimming bath;
a doorway has been made and an iron staircase
provided, which communicates direct with the embankment at
the side of the building.
Provision of
Baths.
105. The Council being of opinion that additional swimming
accommodation in covered buildings is required
for the eastern side of the Borough, the question
of providing such accommodation has been referred to a Committee,
and is now under consideration.
