Overhead
Telegraph
Lines.
86. During recent years the Council has received many complaints
from residents in the Borough of the
erection by the Post Office Authorities of telegraph
poles and wires in the streets. The Council endeavours to arrange
for the laying of the wires underground in cases where their erection
on poles would be likely to cause obstruction and annoyance,
and has been successful in preventing poles being fixed where they
would have been most undesirable. Recently the Council withheld
its consent to the erection of poles in a number of streets,
and suggested to the Post Office Authorities that underground lines
would be more suitable in the localities affected. The PostmasterGeneral
stated, however, that he felt bound, acting as he did in
the interests of the public, to press for the Council's consent to
overhead lines in the following roads, viz.:—
(a) In Welham Road, Streatham, between Rectory Lane and Salterford
Road ;
(b) In Wimbledon Park Road, Southfield, from existing overhead line there
to existing overhead line in Granville Road;
(c) In Putney Bridge Road, Southfield, between Deodar Road and 137, Putney
Bridge Road;
(d) In Station Road and Fernlea Road, Balham; Emmanuel Road and
Haverhill Road, Clapham South, from a point in Station Road near
the junction of Culmore Road to a point in Haverhill Road near
the junction of Midmoor Road;
(g) In Burntwood Lane, Springfield, from a point near Garratt Lane to the
junction of Tranmere Road.
It was stated that if the required consent were not forthcoming
a difference would be deemed to have arisen between the Postmaster-General
and the Council which would have to be
