Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The cases of overcrowding in Clapham were chiefly in
Crichton Street; in Putney, in Quill Lane; in Streatham, in Larch
Road, Zennor Road, and Moffat Road; in Tooting, in Fountain
Road; and in Wandsworth, in Guelph Street, Lydden Road,
Bendon Valley, and Lydden Grove.
Nearly all the cases were caused by sub-letting rooms, largely
in consequence of the original occupier being out of employment.
All the cases were remedied without difficulty, and it was not
necessary to take any Police Court proceedings.
1,060 ashpits were provided or repaired, compared with 1,292
in 1909, and 336 complaints with reference to the non-removal of
house refuse (66 from Clapham, 41 from Putney, 99 from Streatham,
14 from Tooting, and 116 from Wandsworth) were received
during the year. These complaints were, as in previous years,
attended to by the Dusting Inspectors.
1,437 yards in connection with dwelling-houses, and 97 in
connection with stables, were paved, drained, or cleansed, compared
with 1,574 ancl 95 in 1909.
6,010 rooms and 1,266 staircases and passages were cleansed
or repaired, compared with 7,301 rooms and 1,519 staircases and
passages in 1909.
The greatest number of rooms cleansed was in the Balham
Ward, where 1,163 were done, and in Springfield Ward, where
1,060 were done, and the smallest number in Fairfield and Putney,
where the numbers were 285 and 287 respectively.
1,084 drains were cleansed or repaired, and 64 rain-water
pipes disconnected from the drains.
114 notices of reconstruction of drains were sent to the
Borough Engineer from this Department: 37 in Clapham, compared
with 34 in 1909; seven in Putney, compared with five; 36 in
Streatham, compared with 51; 13 in Tooting, compared with 14;
and 21 in Wandsworth, compared with 40.
