25. A Royal Proclamation with respect to the death of His
late Majesty King Edward VII. and the accession
of His Majesty King Georee V. was read by the

at 9 a.m. The Town Clerk and many Aldermen and Councillors
were present.

King George V.

His Majesty King George V. was also read by the

Memorial to
King Edward
VII.
27. The Council considered the steps which were being taken
by the Lord Mayor to provide a Memorial to the
late King Edward VII. and did not think it
desirable to take any action to obtain contributions to the Mansion
House Fund, but that a separate Memorial should be provided
for the Borough. The Mayor issued an appeal to residents in
the Borough for contributions for that purpose, and a Public
Meeting was held at the Wandsworth Town Hall on the 26th
January, 1911, at which the following resolution was passed, viz.:—
"That the proposed memorial should take the form of some visible
and tangible monument (whether a statue, fountain, arch, or other structure),
with appropriate inscription, the particular kind of monument to be determined
by the Mayor and a Committee to be formed by him, when the
amount of subscriptions is approximately ascertained, but such memorial to
be of British manufacture, British material, and designed by British artists."
28. Other Meetings were held in the Borough, and
a sum of over £600 has been subscribed. The Committee
appointed at the Meeting held at the Wandsworth Town Hall
decided that the Memorial should take the form of a Statue of
the late King Edward and should be placed at Tooting Broadway.
The Council approved of the position suggested, and the
Committee having inspected several designs accepted the offer
of Mr. L. F. Roselieb, of Grafton Square, Clapham, to provide
and erect the Memorial at the Tooting Broadway. Endeavours
will be made for the statue to be completed and fixed early in
November next.
