During the ensuing year the Sub-Committee hope to proceed
with the re-cataloguing of the books in the Tate Library.
This work has now become a matter of urgency owing to the
numerous and important additions that have been made to the
collection in recent years and to the fact that several supplementary
lists are now out of print. In the meantime, borrowers
are reminded that some of these minor difficulties might be greatly
mitigated if more frequent and careful use were made of the card
catalogues, which, when used in conjunction with the printed
catalogues, form a complete index to the contents of each library.
The Reading Rooms continue to be used by a very large
number of the inhabitants of the district, and are open every
weekday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sundays (except during
the months of July, August and September) from 3 to 9 p.m. The
Rooms are supplied with a comprehensive selection of the principal
newspapers and periodicals, a list of which is appended to this
Report, pages 17 to 26.
In response to their application the Sub-Committee have
received from H.M. Stationery Office a grant of 105 volumes of
historical publications.
By the liberality of Sir William J. Lancaster, J.P., the staircase
at the Tooting Public Library has been provided with white
Pentelicon marble treads for the better preservation of the stone
steps.
In July, the Reading Rooms and Lending Department of the
Tate Library were re-painted and decorated, and advantage was
taken of the closing of the building to have part of the furniture
re-polished.
