Upper Richmond
Road
Improvement.
87. For some time past the Council has had under consideration
the question of widening Upper Richmond
Road, Putney, to the west of Putney Hill. The
necessary interests in certain of the forecourts in the part of the
road in question have been acquired, and steps are now being"
taken for the compulsory purchase of a strip of land required for
the improvement between Burston Road and Ravenna Road.
Wood- paving,
&e. (Short Loans
Substitution!
Fund.
88. Owing to the extensive wood paving works carried out
during the past year in connection with the construction
of tramways in Streatham High Road it
was anticipated that the Wood Paving, etc. (Short Loans Substitution)
Fund would be considerably overspent. The Highways
Committee were of opinion that it was not desirable to increase
the fixed rate of 1½d. in the £ raised for the purposes of the Fund,
and the Committee in their general estimates allocated the sum of
£,3,000 to defray part of the expenditure on the new paving works
referred to above. The deficit in the Fund at 31st March, 1910,.
was £544.
Unemployment.
89. As in previous years, the Council arranged for the execution,
in conjunction with the Central (Unemployed)
Body for London, of useful works upon which unemployed
workmen could be engaged. The schemes put in hand
this year were as follows, viz.:—
